Family. Friendship. Community. 🌸
Some moments are simple…
but stay with you long after.
So grateful to everyone who came out for the Sakura Project.
This gathering was inspired by Aaron Tang’s Celebration of Life last December — a moment that continues to ripple outward. From that, we wanted to gently open a space where others could also honour the people who have shaped their lives.
It was deeply meaningful to see our community come together to remember parents, grandparents, spouses, and friends — each name written on the water tablet, appearing… and softly fading.
There was something quietly powerful about being by the water, under the cherry blossoms…
sharing reflection, gentle movement through danceFLOW qigong/taichi, and simply being present together.
We connected with people from near and far — Burlington, Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Fort Erie, and even London, Ontario — along with new friends, school friends, and familiar faces.
And it was especially heartwarming to see members of our community bring their pet family along to share in the moment 🐾
The Sakura Project is inspired by the Japanese idea of mono no aware — the gentle awareness of the beauty in things that pass.
Life isn’t only about beginnings or the peak of bloom.
There is also meaning in the after bloom — in what softens, what changes, and what continues in quieter ways.
In the same way, the stories of sunsets can be just as powerful as sunrises.
This gathering was a space to remember…
to feel…
and to simply be.
❤️ If you feel comfortable, share the name of someone you’re remembering today.
Thank you to Beverly J. for the awesome Video clips and photos.

You never really lose someone you love…
You carry them with you.
In the stories.
In the moments.
And sometimes… in the pieces we wear close to our heart.
Captured by the cherry blossoms at the Sakura Project, Spencer Smith Park 🌸
Stay tuned for our conversation with glass artist @skytreesmith who creates Memories in Glass to honour loved ones who have passed.

🌊 World Book Launch – Hamilton
We had the opportunity to attend the World Book Launch of award-winning photographer, Mark Zelinski, and his new book: Niagara Escarpment: Land Between Waters at Tourism Hamilton.
An evening where the conversation continued —
through presentations, Indigenous perspectives, and community dialogue.
🪶 Listening to the Land
A rare gathering…
where Indigenous leaders, stewardship organizations, and researchers were all in the same room.
Not just presenting —
but listening, learning, and sharing responsibility.
A powerful reminder of the connection between land and water —
and the shared responsibility we all hold in protecting both.
🌿 Community Connections
It was also wonderful to see members of our danceScape community there —
including Marietta & Ron, who are sponsors of the book.
Moments like this reflect what community is all about.

🌟 Mindful Movement at Florence Meares Public School! 💃👨👩👧👦
Florence Meares is a welcoming, inclusive JK–8 school in Burlington that supports all children — including those with autism and special needs — through kindness, connection, and community.
It was so special to meet Errol Lee of Caring Concerts and his daughter Annika, who lit up the room with their inspiring singing, hip hop, and break dancing keynote.
danceScape then led a joyful mindful movement session with Latin & Ballroom Dance vibes, danceFLOW Qigong/TaiChi breathing to music, and beautiful parent-child moments.
As part of the danceScape Endowment Fund at the Burlington Community Foundation, we love supporting events like this that bring families together through movement and wellness.
A big thank you to Ryan and the team, and to Dr. Dawn Lazerte, Principal, for this wonderful inaugural event. ❤️
These are the moments that make it all worthwhile.

The blossoms are just beginning to open.
By Saturday they will reach their peak… and then they will fall.
I walked under these cherry trees and wrote my father’s name on the water ink board.
It appeared beautifully… held for a moment… then slowly dissolved.
He used to light up telling us his magic stories — performing for the King of Malaysia, the general who invited him.
Over time those stories grew shorter… until they almost disappeared.
That fear of forgetting — and of being forgotten — is so deep.
But when we share the stories, we bring them back. Even if only for a moment.
This is why the Sakura Project exists.
