50 years of La Classique du Québec 🇨🇦

For generations of dancers, stepping onto that Montréal floor meant something special.

For us, it meant everything.
There were many years when just making the semifinal felt like a victory. The level of dancing was extraordinary and the American champions were often expected to make the finals.

We still remember the first time we made the final of six couples instead.

Then came the night we will never forget.

In 1997, we almost didn’t attend because of work commitments. At the last minute we decided to go.
That decision changed everything.

That night, representing Canada — and our small hometown of Burlington, Ontario — we won La Classique du Québec.

For many Canadian dancers, competitions like this were essential. Not everyone could afford to live or train in Europe, especially London, the centre of ballroom at the time. Events like La Classique allowed us to compete internationally at home, learn from world-class judges, and grow as dancers.

Looking back on our amateur competitive story — becoming 3-time Canadian Champions and 2-time North American Champions — this event will always be part of our journey.

Congratulations on 50 incredible years.

🌸 The Genesis of The Sakura Project

This video was recorded during the Celebration of Life for Robert’s father, Aaron Kok Chew Tang
October 22, 1935 — October 28, 2025.

During that gathering, Robert shared a reflection that would later become the beginning of The Sakura Project.

As a young man, Robert remembered hearing a song called Sakura. For many years he thought it was a love song about a woman named Sakura.

Only later did he learn that Sakura refers to the cherry blossoms of Japan — flowers that bloom beautifully but only for a short time.

In Japanese culture, the blossoms are often associated with mono no aware — the gentle awareness of impermanence and the beauty of passing things.

That idea stayed with him.

During the months when his father was in long-term care, Robert often spoke with his sister, Selina, about taking him to see the cherry trees at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington. They imagined sitting together by the lake beneath the blossoms when spring arrived.

That visit never happened.

But after his father passed away, Robert realized that perhaps the moment could still exist — not just as a private memory, but as something shared with the community.

From that reflection, The Sakura Project was born.

🌸

Each spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom, we invite the community to gather beneath the trees for a quiet moment of remembrance.

There is no formal program.
No speeches.

Only presence.

Some may come remembering a parent, partner, friend, mentor, or ancestor. Others may simply pause beside the lake and reflect on the people who shaped their lives.

If enough people feel inspired, we may also share a gentle impromptu danceFLOW qigong / tai chi–inspired movement experience — a simple way to breathe, move, and reflect together beneath the blossoms.

Because in many ways, the people we love continue to live through the stories we share.

🌸 Stories Beneath the Blossoms — The Sakura Project

Sometimes the things that carry our memories are surprisingly ordinary.

For Beverley, it was her father’s 2000 Honda Odyssey — a van that travelled with the family through ballroom competitions, hospital visits, coffee outings, and life transitions for more than two decades.

Last week, she finally let it go.
In this short conversation, Beverley shares the story of her dad Derek Cayton (June 13, 1929– May 1, 2015) and the vehicle that quietly carried so many memories.

In Japanese culture, cherry blossoms remind us of mono no aware — the beauty of passing things.

Moments, people, and even objects move through our lives.

What remains are the memories and the stories we share.

Salsa Time.
Enjoy & Relax. 💃

One of the best parts of learning Salsa isn’t just the steps —
it’s the community.

People encouraging each other.
Laughing when a step goes sideways.

Celebrating when it finally clicks.
Our Salsa for Absolute Beginners is a welcoming space where everyone is learning together and supporting one another.

No experience needed.
No partner required.

Just great music, good energy, and a fun community.
