💃 They challenged me to Persian dance. But what stayed with me wasn't the dance. It was the story. During the Museums of Burlington's eat make share: a taste of immigration exhibition, Gina and her mother Farnaz shared memories of growing up in Iran. For Gina, childhood meant spending most of her time at her grandmother's home. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all lived nearby. Family wasn't something you visited. Family was simply part of everyday life. When her parents decided to immigrate to Canada, she wasn't happy. She missed her grandmother. She missed the family gatherings. She missed home. Today, she understands the opportunities her parents hoped to create and feels grateful for the sacrifices they made. Along the way, we talked about food, hospitality, respect for elders, searching for authentic ingredients, and why a simple loaf of bread can carry so much meaning. And how places like Samir's Supermarket in Burlington help keep those connections alive. And yes... They challenged me to Persian dance. What started as a dance challenge became a conversation about family, culture, gratitude, and the traditions we carry with us wherever life takes us. When she first came to Canada from Mexico, there were times when she missed family, familiar faces, and the traditions she grew up with. Through music, dancing, and the friendships she found through danceScape and the downtown Burlington community, she discovered a welcoming network of both Latin and non-Latin friends who share a love of music, dancing, culture, and connection. Today, we're celebrating something beautiful ❤️ Her family is joining her in Canada, and three generations are now sharing music, movement, memories, and traditions together. 🌴 Maria and Miklos from Burlington, Ontario originally came to danceScape wanting to feel more comfortable dancing socially ❤️ Recently while vacationing in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, their children secretly recorded this beautiful moment of them dancing bachata to a live Dominican band. At the end of the song, the singer gave them a high five while resort staff applauded them 🌸 What makes this especially meaningful to us is that they do not come from a Latin background — yet through music, movement, and shared experience, they felt confident enough to fully embrace the joy and culture of bachata alongside the local Dominican atmosphere around them.
